I have very long, wavy-to-curly hair, and my favorite straightener is the John Frieda straightener, and a Remington Wet-to-Dry Flat Iron (I always wait until my hair is dry, though). It comes in a wide pump. I get the normal one; the one for super kinky hair doesn't seem to work as well on me.
When you're shampooing, make sure to use conditioner afterwards. Next, towel-dry your hair and comb the tangles out. (I never try to blow-dry my hair unless it's got a few damp patches in it. If I try to do my hair when it's really wet, I end up with frizzies.) Then apply the straightening balm. Comb that through from the scalp to the ends. I also use something from Garnier Fructis that repairs damage and it helps guard against tangles. (It comes in a little round pump. I think it's from her Length and Strength line.)
Once all the products you're going to use to prep your hair are in there, then take a paddle brush (A big, rectangular brush) and blow-dry your hair in sections. I start from the front and work all the way to the back, then do the same thing on the other side. I suggest using an ion hair dryer. As soon as each section is dry (it MUST be completely dry), I give it a shot of the cool air setting. Aim the hair dryer down when you're drying it and it'll help guard against frizz or flyaways. Do the drying in long, smooth strokes.
After your hair is dry, it still might not be completely straight. (Mine never is.) That's when you use a flat iron. I go over each section (1-2 inch sections), again front to back, twice. I use the paddle brush to keep the sections from tangling up or kinking or anything. The flat iron is key.
After the flat ironing, put a VERY tiny amount of a shine serum in the palm of one hand, rub your hands together and give your hair a quick once-over with it. I find those serums go a really long way in keeping your hair tangle-free. And they smell nice. Don't use too much, though, because they can get your hair really greasy-looking. Half a spritz in the palm of your hand or a little more than a drop will do the trick. They help against frizz, too, if you're prone to it. I sometimes rub a dryer sheet (Bounce for me) over all my hair, too, to keep it from getting static-y.
Finally, use a texturing balm to get the piecey look you're talking about. I don't use one, but I know that there are a lot of them out there.
Going from wavy-curly is a very high-maintenance hair style. My hair is waist-length, and it never takes me less than 45 minutes (not including the initial half-air-dry stage before I start adding products) to do my hair. What is the best hair straightener to use or good techniques for straigtning hair?
I kind of have similar hair as yours, I think (It’s not curly, but it’s not straight; it’s kind of in-between, a bit wavy with some curls on the end). However, it goes crazy in the heat and gets huge, so I bought the Chi, and now everything is fine. The great thing about the Chi is its speed it straightens your hair SO fast. I can’t use other straighteners now because I’m used to how fast my straightener is. I recommended it to my friend who has curly ringlets and it straightens her hair super-fast. I totally recommend it.
For techniques, I just recommend (based on what you’ve said) to kind of curve the straightener inwards as you straighten so that the pieces of hair curve inwards, but also don’t fizzle out.
Well, having one of my own, a CHI straightener is the best straightener out there. Though it is a bit expensive, I promise, it's well worth every penny.
Anywho, with or without the CHI, you should always make sure that your hair is completely dry before you start using your straightener. Then, it's also probably a good idea to lightly spray in some heat protecting spray. (I use some kind by Tresseme) Next, separate your top layers from the bottom and pin up the top out of the way. Then, using about 2 in sections of hair, start as near the root of hair as possible and slowly glide straightener down hair. Repeat until all hair is straight. Afterwards, spray hairbrush with hairspray and brush through the top and front layers of hair to keep down all those pesty frizzies!
I hope this helps! Good luck!
Go to youtube.com type in 'wehairu' (no spaces). This is a new item that will be hitting the market any day now. It should be available for purchase through www.treasuredlocks.com. It works marvelously. I know the CEO of the company and he is awesome--knows a lot about hair and has designed this to be healthy for hair too. This product was initially intended for kinky African American hair but works very well on normal types of hair too.
Get a chi!!! they are the best straighteners ever!! they are kind of pricey but its way worth it!! my hair is kinda long and it would never go straight and then i got the chi and it worked so good!!
